Chapter 3
A search engine is something we use every day, but I along with millions of others don't understand the behind the scenes of the web browser. When something is typed into the engine it doesn't search the web but searches its own database? I never knew that, that database must be massive! The book states that web robots search the web to update information on old, new and to delete websites but that sometimes isn't enough to keep the information completely updated. Natural language query is a blessing that regular web users including myself have never heard of. The search engine has the knowledge to turn a question or some lines of text into a query and display what we want to see. A search engine would not be usable without that. Search engines vary along with different algorithms and features. Once information is searched a list will supply hyperlinks from the database that have content from your query. Many times, the first couple hyperlinks are paid advertisements to have a certain company's link at the top. Being a web user my whole life, I have done a lot of surfing on the web, whether it is for a school project, looking for topics for an essay or just killing some time I have spent a lot of time on the web. If you are doing a paper for school, you must be careful picking out webpages, who's the author of the page, what company do they work for, what are their sources, is the page organized? Professional web developers will consider standards that make sure web pages are optimized. Explained in the text titles should always be unique to the information on the page, if there are multiple pages they should be named differently and make sure they align with the content and do a good job of summarizing the information on the page. Web developers do not get enough credit, I cannot imagine the number of websites I visited throughout my whole life. These developers put so much time into making a website easy to use with accurate information and their hard work goes unnoticed.
