Chapter 6

Now a days you hear more about cyber security than actual security. Over half of the world's population using social media platforms and 9 out of 10 United States citizens preform work on a computer cyber security is as big of a threat as any. The book explains a few security threats such as a secrecy threat that is when data get exposed to an unauthorized party, an integrity threat when data is modified by an outside source, and a necessity threat which causes data delays or prevents data from arriving to a location. It also explains a counter measure, I think the book does a good job of explaining a counter measure but lacks examples of it. The next page starts off talking about using encryption to send data, which is great, but that's not common knowledge for everyone. Sure, developers at Google will use encryption to send messages but what about everyone else? Phishing comes next in line, everyone has received them, many fall for them, some are so bad you can tell from reading the title that they are scams and other you may think are real. Phishing has become such a problem that I do not even know if my own bank is texting me regarding purchases on my account. DoS attacks happen when an attacker floods your network with messages resulting in the use of all your networks bandwidth making your network unusable. I know a thing or two about DoS attacks because they have happened to me multiple times when I was playing online video games. Identity theft is another huge problem mostly associated with the older community. Hacking now isn't just a person typing on a computer, social engineering now is when for an example a person targets an elderly person posing as their local bank and now getting possession of their social security number, what do they know they think someone from the bank is calling them and now someone has access to their whole identity. Though there are a lot of cyber criminals out there trying to get your information, a lot of companies have measures for when these events take place. Even tons of services that you can download on your computer that take special measures preventing malware from being downloaded, using firewalls such as Windows Defender, which is free on Windows OS, also programs that detect malware that has already been installed. Services such as LifeLock protect you from identity theft, so good in fact in the advertisement for the service the CEO put his own social security number on the screen confident that his service works. There is a lot of trouble on the internet but with the programs and services available out there you should not be scared to use the internet.
