Chapter 5

Chapter five starts out dull, explaining what push and pull communication is. Push being content that is being sent to users who request it and pull being subscribers pulling content to their devices. I don't quite fully understand the difference because both users still want information, one just took an extra step to, for example, subscribe to an article. The term web 2.0 was coined to say users can get information another way. I think this is undeserving of the title. Only 20% of internet users subscribe to a web article or blog so most users still do a good old google search to find their information. The next page talks about email-based subscriptions, I will say there are certain things that are good from it say for example information about activities on a school campus but when I purchased my gym membership I want to work out, I don't want to receive emails everyday about information that does not have anything to do with me and all they do is take clutter my email. Getting information from feeds is talked about next. Again, there are new feeds for everyone, but what I notice is if I wanted information about a topic and I subscribed to a news feed, there is already different information the next day, if it was a topic that I found interesting and then its already gone what good is that for me? I will say I absolutely love Podcasts; I listen to them on the way to school every morning. My favorite is the Joe Rogan Experience, it's funny, it's entertaining, and informational and some people may not enjoy it but that is the good thing about podcasts, there is something for everyone. The book redeems itself now taking about online communication and social media. Personally, I believe social media and instant messaging is the best part of the internet along with entertainment. One hundred years ago it would have taken months to get a single message across the world and now we can do it in seconds from our bed. The book talks about sharing photos and videos. Instagram for example is a social media platform which makes sharing photos and videos of your life or whatever you please easy. I like using Instagram as it allows me to still see what some of my old friends are up to when they post videos or pictures. Another video platform that I love using is YouTube, youtube allows you to create and post content for any audience you desire. Every night I use YouTube until I fall asleep, there is just so much to watch you will never run out of videos, and like podcasting the great part about YouTube is there is something for everybody.
